Oral corticosteroid (pills and syrup) anti-inflammatories are sold under these brand names: Deltasone®, Medrol®, Prednisone, Pediapred®, etc.

Oral Corticosteroids

Action
Oral corticosteroids (pills and syrup) are strong anti-inflammatories. They quickly stabilize symptoms after a severe deterioration. They may be prescribed for long-term use in cases of severe asthma.

Dosage
This medication is usually taken once a day with breakfast. If prescribed for a longer period, oral corticosteroids are always taken in conjunction with a high dose of inhaled corticosteroids to reduce the need for oral medication.

Side Effects
Short-term side effects (lasting a few days or weeks) include increased appetite, bloating (especially the face), mood swings, digestive problems and insomnia.

Depending on the dosage, duration of use, and susceptibility of the individual, long-term effects (several months) may include increased blood sugar or blood pressure, infections, skin thinning, osteoporosis or bone loss, cataracts causing blurred vision, and retarded growth in children.

Additional Information
Oral corticosteroids should never be stopped abruptly after long-term use. This could cause severe withdrawal symptoms. If you are taking oral corticosteriods, wear a MedicAlert® bracelet .

Always advise your dentist and doctors if you are using oral steroids.
